About Steven Foltz

Steve Foltz plays mandolin, guitar, sings lead and harmony vocals, plays harmonica, and writes songs in the Denver-based touring band, Trout Steak Revival. The band plays more than 80 shows each year, allowing Steve to practice and experiment with various styles on each instrument.

On the guitar, Steve teaches chord changing, finger strengthening, fast flat picking, jazz chord voicing, singing accompaniment, and the CAGED system of lead guitar playing all styles. For the mandolin, Steve teaches chords, scales, fiddle tunes, speed picking, bluegrass picking, and more.

Steve studied mandolin from such great players as Chris Thile of Punch Brothers and Ronnie McCoury of The Del McCoury Band, and studied guitar from teachers including Tyler Grant of Grant Farm and Bryan Sutton of Hot Rize. A strong vocalist, Steve has studied voice from such greats as Aoife O'Donovan of Crooked Still and Lyle Divinsky of The Motet. Steve is accomplished at song writing, including lyrics and composition, and can write, sing, and teach three part harmony singing.

Steve's experience teaching includes group classes for guitar and mandolin, Strings Music Festival song writing, private guitar and mandolin classes, music composition in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Raised in a family of teachers, Steve is patient, kind, and easy to follow. His strength is working with students to create a long term lesson plans that are achievable and promote progress, week after week. Also a visual designer, Steve holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado-Denver, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Minnesota.
