About Sharon Montes

Sharon Montes is a native Houstonian who grew up learning the violin before switching to the double bass. Sharon studied double bass at the University of Texas at Arlington with Dr. Jack Unzicker on a full scholarship where her love for classical music unfolded further. She took every opportunity to grow as a musician by attending masterclasses with Brandon Mclean, Dennis Roy, Max Zeugner, and more. In 2019, Sharon attended the International Summer String Institute at the University of North Texas where she won the audience prize for the festivals concerto competition and performed the Koussevitzky concerto. Sharon was also accepted in 2020 into the PRISMA summer festival in Canada and in 2021 attended the Monteux Music Festival in Maine. During her time in the DFW area, Sharon worked as a Fine Arts Clinician and private instructor for Ben Barber Innovative Academy in Mansfield, TX where she primarily taught 6th-9th grade orchestra students. As a teacher Sharon believes every student should have the opportunity to explore music in any capacity as it it opens the door to many possibilities and opportunities to grow.

This spring Sharon graduated with a Bachelor's in Music Performance from the University of Texas at Arlington and is now pursuing her masters at the University of Houston with Shawn Conley for Music Performance and Pedagogy. In her spare time Sharon plays with the Metropolis Ultimate Frisbee Team at the University of Houston.
