About Marie-Japhette Opong

Meeka Opong began her musical journey at a young age. Inspired by her singer father and pianist mother, she took piano and voice lessons, sang in her church and school choirs, and performed in her school and community theaters. She took her study to a professional level by majoring in music at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in music in 2013. There she received classical vocal training and discovered a love for opera. She continued her vocal studies at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee and graduated with her Master of Music in vocal performance in 2015. She has worked with various opera programs and companies in the U.S., including Nashville Opera, the Taos Opera Institute, and Kingwood Summer Opera. She has also sung multiple lead roles, including Eponine (Les Misérables), Princess Winnifred (Once Upon a Mattress), Little Red (Into the Woods), Dritte Dame (Die Zauberfl?te), Clarina (La cambiale di matrimonio), and Old Maid (The Old Maid and the Thief). Currently, she teaches private voice and piano lessons in the Houston area and continues to be sing locally.

Meeka's goal for her students is not only to help them improve in their technique and musical ability, but also to nurture their love for music. She aspires to help them learn how to express themselves through music, and to instill in them a desire to share this form of musical and self-expression with the world.
