About Lisa Brennan
Lisa has an extensive background in both classical and jazz piano. During high school she studied with the President of the Junior Bach Association, Southern California winning numerous contests playing Bach.
At the University of Washington she continued her classical studies but also studied jazz and composition with William Overton Smith ( Dave Brubeck's close friend and collaborator). While at U.W., she played improvisationally for university dance classes and at the Martha Nishitani dance studio. She completed two bachelor degrees one in music and a bachelor of the arts as well as earning her teaching certificate. Following college she taught music for four years in several elementary schools mastering the essential art of good pacing and creativity which she brings to her private students to this day.
Lisa has played professionally in the Seattle area for many years. She was a Nordstrom pianist for 23 years, played at the Lake Union Cafe and was the house pianist at the Woodmark Hotel at Carillon Point ,Kirkland for 5 years. Her sensitive touch and ability to play in many styles were remarked upon by many, including classical composer Alan Hovaness.
In addition, she has played for weddings, corporate events, graduation and Christmas parties, a fashion show events on boats, fundraisers and restaurants.
Lisa played improvisional piano for numerous plays at Evergreen School for Gifted Children. She performed "West Side Story" with a quintet for Orion Street Youth Theater, an organization that works with homeless teens. Orion combined forces with other organizations that work with at-risk youth in Seattle schools in this play about rival gangs.
Lisa is known for her innovative and fun lessons. She uses small percussion to work on rhythms, puppets where age appropriate and movement. She has composed etudes and other pieces for students to help advance their specific goals. As an effective teacher, Lisa combines her teaching skills with patience and understanding for the best learning experience of the student regardless of age.
