About Kaarin Phelps

A singer from a very young age and a natural teacher, Kaarin Cecilia Phelps combines her knowledge of vocal pedagogy with her own performance experience, to create a dynamic atmosphere in her lessons. From absolute beginners to advanced vocalists, Ms. Phelps has a unique talent of diagnosing vocal problems and working to find their solutions. Specializing in the instruction of classical and musical-theatre singing of all ages, Kaarin has a wide knowledge of repertoire, anatomy, and the slight kinesthetic coordination required to become an informed and empowered vocalist. Her lessons are never the same week-to-week, as they are tailored to what the student would like to work on technically, and her energy is always high as she shares a mutual desire to hear and see improvement in her students. Passionate about youth music education, Kaarin also teaches beginner piano and combined voice-piano lessons, perfectly tailored for the young learner.

Ms. Phelps holds a Bachelor's of Music from the Hartt School and a Master's of Music from the University of Houston, where she studied under he tutelage of Melanie Sonnenberg. Having an expansive performance resume, some of her favorite opera roles are Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and Olga Olsen in Kurt Weill's Street Scene. At UH, Kaarin performed six leading roles including Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, and Augusta Tabor in the Ballad of Baby Doe. Ms. Phelps works as a free-lance artist in the greater Houston area and beyond.
