About Jenny Chao

Dr. Jenny Yang is a violin and piano instructor whose musical journey has spanned the globe. Well-versed in music history, music theory, composition and performance, Jenny's well-rounded approach to teaching provides a firm foundation to all of her students.

A native of Taiwan, Jenny began her piano studies at age 5 and picked up the violin at age 7. She continued playing both instruments through high school and college, serving as Associate Concertmaster and Concertmaster of the school orchestras. During this time, she also joined several professional orchestras including renowned Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Henry Mazer, and participated in several music festivals in Taiwan, as well as the Aspen International Music Festival. She earned a Bachelor of Music from Taipei National University of the Arts, followed by a Master of Music degree from Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Oleh Krysa, one of the world's top concert violinists and a prominent student of David Oistrakh. Her education culminated with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in violin performance from Catholic University of America, where she studied with Jody Gatwood. In 2016 she was invited to accompany the Department of Thermal Engineering chorus, and was awarded the "Best Accompanist" of Division B of Tsinghua University 129 Chorus Competition. She continues to be an active performer and accompanist both locally and abroad, and has many years of training and experience in chamber music and symphony orchestras.

Jenny is an enthusiastic, dedicated, and patient teacher. She enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities and is always ready to provide inspiration and motivation. Understanding that every student has their own talent and comprehension ability, she carefully observes them before selecting a technique that matches their needs, and is an advocate for finding the most effective way to best help each individual make progress. Drawing on her own experiences -- whether it be coping with anxiety when preparing for a performance, or dealing with frustration when facing any mental or technical challenge -- she shows empathy and encouragement in all situations. Above all, she believes learning an instrument should always be fun and rewarding!
