About Gersh Chervinskiy
Gershik Chervinsky is a Russian-born Violin, Viola, Piano, and Music Theory instructor based in the D.C. area. As an avid performer and educator, he has a lifetime of experience in music and a passion for helping students experience the joy, creativity, and positivity that can come from their study.
Gersh began his own music study at the age of 5, and his primary instrument is Violin. He completely immersed in his study at the Academic Music Conservatory in Moscow and graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Music from the Moscow Conservatory in 2016. After, he had the opportunity to move to the US to attend the IU Jacobs School of Music to earn his Master's Degree in Music. Most recently, he studied at Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. In his career, Gersh has participated in numerous masterclasses, festivals, and competitions. Some stand-out achievements include a masterclass with legendary Haim Taub at Keshet Eilon Festival, Professor Guillaume Sutre of UCLA and the Julliard School of Music, as well as placing in the 2012 Cremona Music Festival and Competition in Italy.
As a performer and musician, Gersh has developed a great love of Baroque Era repertoire represented by conductors like Harnoncourt and Gardiner. He also has looked up to Classical performance legends like Fritz Kreisler, Itzhak Perlman, and Phillip Hirshhorn. These performers and other greats, influenced his own style tremendously and set the bar of excellence that he works towards.
As an educator, Gersh has extensive private lessons and ensemble experience with students. He's taught privately since 2013 and works with all ages: from young beginners through adults. Gersh has also served as a Teacher Assistant at the IU Summer String Academy and worked with the Fairview Elementary School in Bloomington, IN. In both private and orchestra settings, he utilizes both traditional and Suzuki methods for strings students. Gersh believes that every student should have an individualized approach based on the methodology that is the best match for their learning style, and he customizes every curriculum based on the student's goals, age, and other factors.
In addition to Violin as his primary instrument, Gersh also studied Piano and Viola as secondary instruments, and he works with private students in these areas. His training in both areas was part of his coursework since childhood due to the conservatory setting for his education, and he has a strong command of Music Theory. Piano proficiency, specifically, was a vital part of gaining a holistic understanding of both theory and orchestral works. With students, he uses traditional methodologies for piano and enjoys using the Faber, John Thompson, and Alfred methods.
No matter the instrument of study, Gersh places a lot of emphasis on teaching with positive reinforcement so students build their confidence and develop a greater sense of self-esteem through music study. In his own journey, working with teachers who brought positivity to his learning were the most impactful, and he strives to provide this setting for all. His primary aspiration is to educate and inspire his students to fully enjoy and appreciate the gift of music and share this joy with others.
