About Anna Stephens

Anna Stephens is an accomplished pianist and pop vocalist from Indianapolis, Indiana who began taking piano lessons at the age of 3 ½. She quickly began to play anything and everything that she could learn, including playing songs by ear from the radio. Shortly after turning 8, Anna auditioned for the Indianapolis Children's Choir. During her time in the choir, she learned to sing in many different languages including the standard romantic languages, Hungarian, Swahili, Russian and many more. She also had the privilege of taking part in Canterbury Cathedral's 500-year Anniversary of Evensong, in England. It was in the choir that she developed a strong foundation for music theory and an overall greater appreciation for music. While in high school, Anna auditioned as a background vocalist for 90's alternative cover group, "2-ton Ray Gun" and found herself performing on the weekends during her junior and senior years of high school.

Anna began accompanying for her high school choir in 9th grade and subsequently found herself accompanying for numerous solo and ensemble students from choir and band. After graduation, her family moved to the Pacific Northwest, and she took to studying piano performance at Shoreline Community College. At Shoreline, she studied under Nancy Matesky and Jensina Byington with emphasis being on Piano Performance. It was there that she got her first student through a student tutoring program. After two years, she found herself presented with a variety of performing opportunities as a keyboardist with a jazz band and Seattle based black metal band, "Inquinok". She has shared the stage with metal music greats such as "Sadus", "Incantation" and "Cannibal Corpse", and has also done vocal and keyboard work for cover group "That 80's Show" - a performing group of impersonators at Muckleshoot Casino.

Anna's classical background, combined for her love of contemporary/modern music is sure to give you a very well-rounded music experience. With every lesson, you will learn the art of sight reading, music theory and ear training. Her favorite genres are ragtime, jazz and late romantic/early contemporary. The composers that have been her focus of study have included George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Chopin and William Bolcom. She also loves to collect piano collections from various movies and video games.

Currently, Anna serves as an accompanist for the Columbia Children's Choirs Association. She lives in Woodinville, Washington with her husband Blane, their 2 boys Cade and Kyler (16 and 3) and cat Trooper. Her hobbies include studying the rock and metal music genre, writing and transcribing rock songs for the piano, Legos and video games. She enjoys spending time with her family on the weekend and attending concerts. And -- she absolutely can't wait to share her knowledge and love of piano and voice!
