As a piano teacher in Seattle, WA I am often asked by piano students and their parents, “how often should I tune my piano?” Pianos should be tuned twice a year on average. Pianos naturally go out of tune over time due to change in weather and humidity. However the more that a piano is played, the faster it may go out of tune. An average piano student may only need their piano to be tuned twice a year where as a concert pianist would need their piano to be tuned up to four times a year.
Keeping your piano in top shape helps with practicing for the student. A piano that is working properly is more likely to be played than one that is not. It can be frustrating for the student to practice on a piano where the notes “sound funny” or keys and pedals are not working.
Hi Emily, I’m wondering your feelings on starting piano lessons on an out of tune piano? I always tell parents and students, lets get started. That’s me though, what are your thoughts?
