About Sean Nix

Sean Nix grew up in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C. and began playing music as a elementary school student. Starting with trumpet, he quickly developed a fascination with the piano. He spent his grade school years immersed in music through State Solo & Ensemble festivals, jazz ensembles, school band, marching band and jamming with friends. At the end of his senior year, Sean won the John Philip Sousa Award, recognizing superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty, and cooperation.

After finishing high school, he moved to Boston to study music at Berklee College of Music earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Film Scoring (Music Composition). He continued his training in piano performance with Bob Winter, pianist for the Boston Pops Orchestra under John Williams and Keith Lockhart. Sean also studied under renowned jazz pianist, composer and recording artist Ray Santisi. During his time in Boston, Sean enjoyed working on many projects, from composing for production houses and documentaries to performing in many local jazz, classical and contemporary music ensembles. He also developed a passion for teaching.

As a teacher with the Community Music Center of Boston, Sean worked with principals and music therapists in the Boston Public School System to develop and teach music curriculum to students with special needs. He moved back to the Washington D.C. area in 2001 and shortly afterwards managed the eSharp music program as part of Berklee College's City Music network. This program not only gave young artists the opportunity to study music and be apart of a supportive arts community, but also helped them to expand their worldview and instilled in them a lifelong love of music and art. In addition, a few students won full scholarships to Berklee College of Music.

Sean continues his love for music much the same way he started. He is the piano accompanist for his youngest son's violin State Solo & Ensemble Festival events. With the band Prime Time, Sean performs jazz and contemporary music in the D.C. area having enjoyed play for inaugurations, weddings and major fundraising events. He is also a music production tech geek, tinkering with software, gadgets and audio equipment to compose and record his music productions.

As an educator, Sean strives to instill a lifelong love of music in his students through patience, perseverance, exploration and fun. Understanding music theory and technique are just the scaffolding to molding creative, confident and outstanding individuals of any age.
